Sain kunnian olla mukana valokuvaaja Jukka Alasaaren mahtavassa Taru Sormusten Herrasta-projektissa, mitä varten tein kolmannen cosplay asuni. En varsinaisesti harrasta cosplaytä, vaikka se olisi upeaa, mutta ainakaan tässä elämänvaiheessa siihen ei ole yksinkertaisesti aikaa. Tunnen myös itseni ja tiedän, että täysin samaan asuun monta kertaa pukeutuminen ei olisi mielekästä. Pidän asujen ja asusteiden tekemisestä niin, että voin käyttää niitä erilaisissa kokonaisuuksissa.
Tällä kertaa oli toinen ääni kellossa. Olen suuri Tolkien ja TSH -fani, myös Eowyn on yksi lempihahmoja johon voin henkilökohtaisesti samaistua. Olen halunnut sellaisen reilun kymmenen vuotta tehdä Eowyn:in asuja elokuvasta ja nyt siihen oli oiva syy ja tilaisuus. Valittiin yhdessä valokuvaajan kanssa Rohanin neidon valkoinen villamekko, sillä se on hahmolle hyvin nimikkolookki.
I had the honor to be a part of an awesome Lord of the Rings-project by photographer Jukka Alasaari, for which I did my third cosplay outfit. Cosplay is not really a hobby of mine, even though it would be amazing, but at least right now there's simply no time for it in my life. I also know myself and wouldn't like the idea of dressing up into the exact same outfit several times. I like making outfits and accessories so that I can use them with different outfit coordinations.
This time around it was different. I'm a huge Tolkien and LOTR -fan, also Eowyn is one of my favorite characters and personally can relate to her. I have wanted to make Eowyn's outfits from the movie for over ten years and now there was an excellent reason and opportunity for it. Together with the photographer we chose the white wool dress of Lady of Rohan, because it's a very signature look for the character.

Harvinainen tapaus, kun lähdin hakemaan kangasta ihan kangaskaupasta, kun yleensä käytän mitä kaapista löytyy. No nyt ei ollut oikeanlaista valkoista. Mekkohan on todellisuudessa luonnonvalkoista villakangasta, joka näyttää kuvissa valkoselta. Ihoni on hyvin herkkä ja kutisen pienestäkin villasekoituksesta, joten vähän arvelutti asia. Koska villakankaat olivat kuitenkin sellaista 70€/m, päädyin muuhun vaihtoehtoon. Etsin luonnonvalkoisen sävyistä ja kohtuu edullista kangasta, mikä laskeutuisi mukavasti ja onneksi sellainen löytyi. Vuorikankaana käytin paria ohutta halpislakanaa. Yhteensä kangasta mekossa ja vuoressa on vajaa viisi metriä.
Oikeasti Eowynin mekossa ei ole muoto-ompeleita ja saumat etupuolella menevät irroitettavan vyön alla. Haluan mahdollisesti käyttää mekkoa muussakin tarkoituksessa ja ilman vyötä, niin tein vartalo-osuuden kuudesta pystysuorasta palasta. Kaula-aukko on hieman ylempänä, koska v-aukot ei ole ihan se oma juttu, joten sekin muokattu. Asu on oma tulkintani mekosta, mutta tunnistettavissa hahmoksi.
A rare case, that I went to buy fabric from a store, when usually using what I have in my closet. Right now there wasn't the right kind. The dress is in reality off-white wool fabric, which looks like white in pictures. My skin is very sensitive and will be itchy from a mixture with even a little bit wool in it, so it was a bit troubling. Because the wool fabrics were like 70€/m, ended up choosing something else. I was searching for a natural white toned and affordable fabric, which would fall down nicely and luckily found one. As for the lining I used a couple of cheap sheets. All together on the dress and lining there's almost five meters of fabric.
Eowyn's dress doesn't really have shape stitches and the seams in the front are below the detachable belt. I might possibly want to use the dress for some other purpose and without the belt, so I made the bodice out of six vertical pieces. The neckline is a little higher, because v-necks are not really my thing, so that's changed as well. The outfit is my own interpretation of the dress, but still recognizable as the character.
Tämä on toinen kerta kun teen kirjontaa. Ensimmäinen kerta oli ala-asteen käsityötunnilla, kun tein Karvisen kuvaa tyynyyn. Kaula-aukon kirjailu oli kuitenkin pakko toteuttaa. Tässä vaiheessa mekko odotti jonkin aikaa, sillä en voinut yhdistää osia ennen kuin sain ostettua kirjontalankaa ja sitä ei meinannut löytyä mistään! Piti erikseen lähteä nappi- ja nauhakauppaan hakemaan. Samalla löytyi kiva kokonaisuuteen sopiva reunusnauha.
Ensin jäljensin paperille kirjailun kuvion useasta netistä löytyvästä lähteestä tulkiten. Sitten vahvensin piirroksen tussilla, laitoin kankaan alle ja piirsin lyijykynällä kankaaseen ohjeviivat. Tein kirjontaa kahdella langalla vuorotellen ja samalla katsoen mikä kohta kuuluu kummallakin puolella menevät minkä päältä ja mikä alta. Olen kovin itsekriittinen ja lopputulos on..noh..tyydyttävä. Onneksi kaukaa katsottuna ihan ok. Tuli tästä melkeimpä innostus harjoitella enemmänkin kirjontaa!
This is the second time for me to be doing embroidery. The first time was in elementary school, when I made a picture of Garfield on to a pillow. The neckline embroidery just had to be done. At this point the dress was waiting for a while, because I couldn't attach the pieces before I could buy embroidery thread and almost couldn't find it anywhere! Had to especially go to a button- and ribbon-store to get some. At the same trip found a nice braid that matches to the whole imagine nicely.
First I drew the embroidery pattern to a piece of paper from many sources I found on the internet. Then I thickened the line with a marker, placed the paper under the fabric and drew guidelines to the fabric. I made the embroidery with two threads alternately and at the same time checking which part goes over and which under. I'm very self-critical and the result is..well..satisfactory. Luckily when seen from afar it's ok. When doing this got kind of excited to practice even more embroidery!
"Lehdet" muistuttaa mun mielestä enemmänkin mini-croisantteja tai toukkia. x)

Saumat ovat aika huolitellut, mikä tekee kankaan ja mallin kanssa mekosta hieman fantasia hääpukua muistuttavan, mutta olen pikkutarkka ja tykkään tehdä asiat huolella. Aina asuja tehdessä mietin, että jos joskus niistä luovun ja uusi omistaja kurkkii kaikki nurkat, ettei siellä ole mitään kauhean pahoja rumiluksia törröttämässä. Yläosasta ja hihoista kangas ja vuori on ommelut saumojen kohdalta yhteen. Lantion alapuolelta taas saumat ovat huoliteltu erillään, että helma saa liikkua vapaammin.
Hihanyöreiksi tein haarukkanyöriä villalangasta. Kaapista sattui sopivasti löytymään mummulta saatua värjäämätöntä villalankaa, mikä sopii mielestäni tosi kivasti asuun. Haarukkanyöriä on muutenkin kiva näpertää ja sitä tekee vaikka netflixiä töllöttäessä. :)
The seams are quite neat, which together with the fabric and the design makes it resemble a bit like fantasy wedding dress, but I'm quite particular and like to do things carefully. Always when making outfits I'm thinking if I were to sell them someday and the new owner is going through all of the corners, so there won't be awfully lot ugliness sticking out. The upper part and sleeves have the fabric and lining sewn together at the seams. From below the pelvis the seams are tidied separately, so the hem will move more freely.
As for the sleeve cordon I made lucet braid out of wool yarn. Found some in my closet, undyed wool yarn that have gotten from my grandma, which in my opinion fits nicely to the outfit. Lucet braiding is nice anyways and can do it even while watching netflix. :)

En malta odottaa asun valmistumista ja kokeilen sitä päälle aina vaiheiden välillä. :P
Aluksi suunnittelin, että olen ihan omalla tukalla ja parilla lisäkkeellä, koska omat hiukset ovat aikas pitkät (pidemmät kuin klipsulisäkkeet) ja värikin vähän sinne päin. Alla olevat sellfiet otin ensimmäisellä kuvauskerralla, mikä tosin peruuntui, koska kuvaajan auto hajosi matkalla kuvauspaikalle. Näinkin voi käydä. :P Vietin sitten päivää Helsingissä Elfien kanssa ennen junalla kotiin matkustelua. Oikeastaan nyt kun mietin, oma tukka voisi olla ollut parempi, koska korkea otsa ja hiusraja olisi näkynyt Eowynin tapaisesti paremmin. Löysin kuitenkin ihanan lace front peruukin Wig is Fashion:ilta ja halusin laittaa sen. Peruukki muistuttaa hieman enemmän tyyliltään Game of Thrones:in Cerseitä ja nyt kun on tukka, niin ehkä pakko tehdä myös cossi!
I don't have the patience to wait till the outfit is ready and trying it on always in between steps. :P
At first I planned to go with my own hair and a couple of clip-ons, because my nautral hair is quite long (longer then my clip-on extensions) and the color something like that. The selfies below are taken on the first photoshoot attempt, which got cancelled because the photographer's car broke down. These things can happen. :P So I spent the day in Helsinki with Elfie before heading home on a train. Actually now then thinking about it, my own hair could have worked better, because the high forehead and hairline would have been shown in more Eowyn's style. I found a lovely lace front
wig from Wig is fashion and wanted to use it. The wig resembles a bit more like Cersei from Game of Thrones with the styling and now that I have the hair, might have to do the cosplay!

Éowyn on veljensä kanssa menettänyt isänsä nuorella iällä ja äitinsä surun syövereihin. Eowyn ja veljensä Eomerin kanssa on kasvattama enonsa Kuningas Theoden toimesta Rohanissa. Ihmiset Rohanissa ovat synkkiä ja ankaria, Eowynin elämässä ei ole ollut paljon iloa, joten hän ei luonnostaan ole kovin iloinen ihminen. Hän on viileän kaunis vaalean ihonsa ja kultaisten hiustensa kanssa. Eowyn on vahva nainen ja Rohanin kilpineito, jolta ei puutu taitoja miekankäytössä.
Éowyn and his brother have lost their father on a very young age and their mother to the depths of grief. Eowyn and Eomer are then raised by their uncle King Theoden in Rohan. The people of Rohan are grave and fierce, there hasn't been much joy in Eowyn's life, so she's not naturally a very happy person. She's chilly and beautiful with her pale skin and golden hair. Eowyn is a strong woman and a shield maiden of Rohan, who doesn't lack skills when dealing with a sword.

Oli tosi mukava kuvauspäivä! Aion kyllä vetäistä tämän asun johonkin tapahtumaan päälle ja olisi mahtavaa kyllä kuvailla joskus vielä uudestaankin jotain kivaa Alasaaren kanssa!
Was a very nice photoshoot day! I'm going to put this outfit on to some event in the future and would be amazing to shoot something fun sometime again with Alasaari!
